As you leave Los Angeles towards Palm Springs on Interstate 10 you know you are close once you see the wind turbines (windmills) towering on both sides of the highway. The largest of the wind turbines are about 160 feet tall.
The San Gorgonio Pass wind farm – one of the largest in California – takes advantage of a natural wind tunnel when weather systems force air up against the San Bernardino Mountains to the north and the San Jacinto Mountains to the south.
This wind farm contains more than 4000 separate wind turbines and provides enough electricity to power Palm Springs and the entire Coachella Valley.
in 2018, wind turbines produced 6.6 percent of the electricity generated by U.S. power plants. In California, 11.46% of all power used was generated by wind turbines in 2018.
This is one of my favorite photos that I veer took of the wind turbines in Palm Springs. It was taken against the sun, which made the San Jacinto Mountains disappear in different layers of grey in the background.
